Composite Construction and Tulip Fields

06 Sept 2021
When it comes to hubs of high tech sailboat construction in the USA, not many would identify a small Michigan city along the shore of Lake Macatawa as the place to be, but just around the corner from Tulip City Brewstillery in Holland is Composite Builders.

Working closely with Gordon Kay, AB Marine supplied the zero drag Custom GORI Race 457mm x 330 LHS to suit the Beta 45 SP60 saildrive on the Infinity 52 (TP52)

Primarily known for the Tulip Time Festival, which has been ranked as America’s third-largest town festival, the Dutch heritage of Holland is now home for boat building too.

After gaining some notoriety during the 36th America’s Cup as where Stars+Stripes Team USA had their AC75 partially built before they ran out of funds, Composite Builders has now pushed into the daylight the first of two Infiniti 52s they are building.

The foil-driven sailing yacht is the first racing yacht designed, engineered, and built around the innovative Dynamic Stability System (DSS) which provides proven performance without the risk and cost of more complex class-driven foil solutions. DSS provides significant righting moment allowing the yacht to be sailed with a much smaller crew of 7-8.

The first Infiniti 52 will be shipped to the UK to undergo extensive sea trials and crew training. She is anticipated to participate in the RORC Transatlantic Race in January 2022.

“We have an ambitious set of offshore goals, and this is the future-proof Grand Prix yacht required to achieve them,” said skipper Arto Linnervuo. “We are thrilled to be part of the revolution and look forward to racing this fast, fun rocket that will be easy to sail with a smaller crew.”

Hull two is under construction at Composite Builders for delivery at the end of 2021. https://www.livesaildie.com/the-midwest-delivers-next-generation-racing-yacht-infiniti-52/

HAVE YOU GOT THE NEED FOR SPEED?

01 September 2021

It’s the small incremental advances we make to a yacht that when combined bring formidable results. Whether that be breaking records, looking for a race win, or simply finding that smooth ride, it’s time to look below your waterline.

Breaking records – choose a GORI Propeller as that’s what some of the fastest sailors choose. Two big launches in recent weeks have chosen GORI Propellers: the latest IMOCA 60 and the new 101ft ULTIM. 11th Hour Racing Team’s IMOCA 60 designed for fully crewed, short-handed and solo offshore racing will set sail with a GORI Racing Propeller whilst the latest Francois Gabart Trimaran SVT Lazartigue 101ft Ultim is equipped with a GORI three-blade propeller. We’ll be following their progress as these teams prepare for their first big races.

Improve performance – choose a GORI Propeller as less drag means greater efficiency. GORI Propellers have by far the lowest drag propeller whilst sailing with many yards fitting them as standard. Remember you can always retrofit a GORI Propeller.

Life is about the journey, not the destination – choose a GORI Propeller. They offer by far the smoothest propeller based on proven design and engineering with the best manoeuvrability. So, if you want to get to your destination for sundowners and not spill your G&T on the way, choose GORI Propeller.

The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. Find out more on the GORI Racing Propeller – www.gori-propeller.com.

The folding propeller: An interest that goes beyond racing yachts

14 June 2021

A reflection on the choice of propeller, constrained but welcome

Vincent Thouvenel has been the happy owner of a 12-meter aluminum sailboat for 2 years. If he sails well, it is not a racing boat. However, he likes to keep performance and was forced to look at the type of propeller installed following the loss of his propeller. “My boat is an amateur design-build from the late 1980s, made by a friend of Michel Joubert. It would have inspired the naval architect for the JNF 38. It is a dinghy with a light displacement of 8.2 tons and a sail area of 85 m². It is well covered, but it is not a racing boat. I bought it 2 years ago with a Kiwi Prop folding propeller. Unfortunately, I lost it while reversing in the Erdre river and it was impossible to find it”, says the yachtsman.

Forced to find a quick solution, he bought a fixed 3-blade propeller. “It was complicated. I did extensive research to find this second-hand propeller, but there is no propeller with the right pitch that can be easily adapted. In the end, it worked well with the engine, but I quickly felt the brake under sail. So I quickly wanted to find a folding propeller” says Vincent Thouvenel.

A gain in engine manoeuvrability

After researching, he finally settled on the Gori brand. “The metal blades reassured me more than the composite, even if the Kiwi Prop was efficient, although the loss of my propeller obviously made me cold. And the Gori system is a beautiful mechanism, which seduced me from my job as a merchant marine mechanic” justifies the sailor. He also emphasizes the simplicity of assembly, carried out independently from the manual. Only a translation problem, currently being solved, left a doubt.

Vincent Thouvenel was impressed by the engine’s performance. “It’s efficient in forward motion, but there’s especially a gain in reverse, with a real boost. I only have 24 horsepower, which is low, but I can stop in reverse much better than with a fixed blade propeller and there is much less pitch effect” he says.

A faster boat under sail

The most sought-after effect for the yachtsman is that the gains are also achieved under sail. Without providing any figures, the owner estimates the boat’s acceleration at 0.5 knots, while pointing out that a fairing carried out at the same time as the change also comes into play. “There’s a real gliding feel, even in light airs. It’s more expensive than other propellers, but I see it as an investment that can be used when the boat is resold. And it’s like the sails, it’s important to invest in them to move forward” concludes Vincent Thouvenel.
